EAL
NTE Pupils
Pupils that arrive that are new to English (NTE) are assigned a support programme that ensures they are able to partake in all aspects of school life as soon as possible. All NTE pupils will be assessed on arrival to ascertain their starting point. From there, a part-time programme of intervention is established with the pupil being supported on a one to one basis or in a small group.
The support will encompass New to English sessions where everyday language is taught via speaking and listening, 1:1 reading sessions and early writing sessions.
NTE pupils will spend a larger proportion of the week in class to enable them to absorb the language around them. Where possible, they will be partnered with a classmate that speaks the same home language. When in class, all work will be adapted to their language ability. This adapted work is regularly reviewed as they acquire the English language.
Pupils with English as an additional language
Pupils with EAL are supported by all staff. Some EAL pupils will attend intervention sessions to support them in developing their reading and writing skills, often with the emphasis on grammar. Where necessary, pupils will be supported with the acquisition of mathematical vocabulary.
Within class, EAL pupils will have adapted work, alongside support from the class teacher or member of support staff. Pupils with EAL will be assessed based on their proficiency and interventions or additional classroom support will be put in place where needed.
